Optional Open Water Dive
Depth, Supervision and Ratios
Open water dive Maximum depth: 12 metres/40 feet.
During the dive new divers must not engage in any other activities, such as video or photography. Any accompanying certified diver or certified assistant may take video or photos.
Open water environment Ratios
Participant-to-instructor 4:1
Participant-to-instructor with certified assistant(s) 6:1
Skills for Open Water Dive
When Discover Scuba Diving divers will go on an open water dive, a PADI Instructor will introduce and have them practice the following skills in shallow water if they have not already been introduced in confined water experience:
Breathing underwater
Regulator clearing
Regulator recovery
Mask clearing
Equalization techniques
When participant Divers are comfortable in the shallow water, they may progress to the open water dive
A PADI Instructor will directly supervise the first open water scuba dive
Subsequent Open Water Dives
Upon Satisfactory completion of the first open water scuba dive participant will be presented a recognition card (included in the registration pamphlet). The recognition card is to be signed and dated by the PADI Instructor conducting the initial open water dive. (At this time participants have the opportunity to continue by enrolling in the PADI Open Water Diver Course).
Time Limit
Since the Discover Scuba Diving program is not a certification course, there is a time limit for participants to make additional open water dives beyond the initial open water experience. A Discover Scuba Diving participant may make additional supervised open water dives within two weeks (14 days) of completing an entire Discover Scuba Diving experience including completion of the Instructor Presentation, Water Skills Introduction, Development session and initial open water dive. After two weeks the participant must repeat all portions of the Discover Scuba Diving experience prior to making additional open water dives.
