Swan Island Submarine J3

The Wreck Today

This submarine (the J3 sub.) was scuttled in its present condition off Swan Point near Queenscliff, where it was to act as a breakwater. It lies in 5-8m of water and is an interesting dive for 2 reasons:

  1. It allows close examination (both inside and out) of a J Class submarine prior to or after visiting one of the subs in deep water outside the Heads.
  2. When the J3 was sunk in its present location, it settled almost on top of another wreck, the 961 ton coal hulk S. F. Heresy.

While this submarine lacks the obvious access points to enable divers to enter the hull, it makes for an interesting dive nevertheless. The stern area with the stabilising fins and propeller shaft are particularly worth examining. The J3 is a good dive for the inexperienced wreck diver, or as a shallow second dive.

Hazards and Precautions

Boat operators should exercise caution in the vicinity of the J3, as the hull extends for quite some distance just under the surface both at the bow and at the stern. If walking around at the top of the hull, be wary of the sharp metal. Wear substantial footwear to avoid this problem. The area is affected by tidal currents, and slack water is necessary. However the F.S.Hersey is sheltered from the flood tides by the J3 Sub.

The wrecks are a popular fishing site, and there will often be boats anchored near by. With common sense and co-operation divers and anglers can avoid interfering with each others activities.
